Chess in Zagreb and its county
Zagreb plays its chess in clubs. They meet in local committee rooms, school halls and fire-brigade halls from Novi Zagreb and Špansko to Maksimir, Dubrava and Sesvete, and nearly all of them play league rounds from spring into autumn. A ring of county clubs, from Zaprešić and Samobor to Velika Gorica and Vrbovec, plays in the same leagues. Opens, memorials and youth championships fill the calendar, and several clubs run chess schools for children.

Chess960 in Zagreb
No Chess960 game across a real board was found in Zagreb or Zagreb County. The tournament lists for Croatia from 2025 to 2027, the FIDE-rated events played in the country and the pages of the city and county associations and of several clubs were searched for Chess960, Fischer random, Fischerov šah and Freestyle, and none of them names such an event.
In Chess960 the pieces behind the pawns begin in one of 960 shuffled orders, so a prepared opening is worth little and both players are on their own from the first move. Until a Zagreb club puts it on its programme, it can be played online at ch960.com.
No Chess960 event across a real board has turned up in Zagreb or the county so far.
How to read an entry
Every entry rests on pages anyone can open: the Croatian Chess Federation's member register, the club list of the Zagreb Chess Association, the county association's reports, the league tables of the Centar league, the chess-results tournament server and the clubs' own sites. An entry shows the date of its newest trace and quotes what that trace says.
Lists are ordered by the date of the newest evidence, never by any judgement of a club or a tournament. A field that no page fills reads "not stated by sources". What the status lines and the three source marks mean, and what the register leaves out, is set out under about the register.
A club missing, or an entry out of date?
Zagreb clubs move between local committee rooms and school halls, and league teams come and go from one season to the next. If an entry trails behind, or a club or tournament is missing, send a short note with a link to the page that shows it.
